The rebellion in the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Rajya Sabha elections are expected to boost the BJP-led NDA's numbers in Parliament. The BJP government is seeking a two-thirds majority in both houses to pass a crucial constitutional amendment bill.
While the current round of Rajya Sabha elections will help the NDA get closer to the two-thirds majority mark, it is still far from the magic figure of 363 in the Lok Sabha despite the TMC switching sides.
What does Parliament maths say?
Jagran sources suggest the NDA will add three seats to its current tally of 148 by winning independent seats in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand and Mizoram. Following the resignation of three TMC MPs and by-elections, the NDA will gain three seats from West Bengal, taking its tally to 154, nine short of a two-thirds majority in the upper house.
As more TMC MPs are likely to resign from the Upper House, the NDA may reach the 163-mark, giving it the required numbers to pass all the constitutional amendment bills.
Number to decrease again in November
The ruling coalition's strength may diminish by November as 10 MPs from Uttar Pradesh will retire, and the Samajwadi Party may gain some seats in the Rajya Sabha due to its superior numbers in the state assembly.
64 MPs from the opposition alliance
The opposition INDI alliance currently has 64 MPs, as the DMK (with eight MPs) has withdrawn, and the AAP (with three MPs) has disassociated itself from the group. Independent parties like the YSRCP and BJD (which have seven and six seats, respectively) and the MDMK could swing either way in the Rajya Sabha.
However, the NDA's tally in the Lok Sabha could reach 213, as approximately 20 more TMC MPs could form a breakaway group and support it. These MPs who left the party will meet Speaker Om Birla on Monday and submit a letter announcing their separation from the TMC. A two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha requires 363 MPs.
