Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday inaugurated the much-awaited 13.3 km 'Missing Link' project on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. He hailed the stretch as an 'engineering marvel' and an 'iconic project' that will act as an 'economic multiplier' for the state.
The 13.3-km Missing Link on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been constructed to bypass the steep mountain pass section to improve road safety and reduce travel time between the two busiest cities, news agency PTI reported.
Key Highlights Of The Missing Link
- The 13.3 Missing Link has been developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
- It has been built at a cost of approximately Rs 7,000 crore.
- The chief minister said that the project will act as an "economic multiplier" and help create a Rs 70,000 crore economy by boosting investments, connectivity and industrial growth along the corridor.
- According to Hindustan Times, the project features the widest road tunnel in the world and the tallest cable-stayed bridge in the country. He said the Missing Link has been included in the Guinness Book of World Records.
- The 13.3-km project includes two tunnels, two viaducts, and a cable-stayed bridge over the Tiger Valley.
- It has been designed to bypass the steep and accident-prone ghat section, which witnesses frequent traffic congestion, especially during weekends and on public holidays.
- The project will improve road safety and reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune by 25 to 30 minutes.
- Fadnavis further stated that the project was originally conceptualised in 2010. However, the progress was frequently stalled due to multiple objections, including concerns over a lake above the alignment.
