Tensions erupted between the residents of a housing society in Mumbai's Mira Road area on Tuesday ahead of Eid al-Adha, after a section of people protested the placement of goats in the residential complex.

The argument soon escalated into clashes in the Poonam Cluster Society. According to reports, some residents of a Thane housing complex objected to keeping goats inside the society for religious sacrifice during Eid al-Adha.

A large police force was deployed in the area to control the situation. As tensions escalated, some members of the Hindu outfits arrived at the society complex with pigs.

A purported video of a man holding a pig has surfaced on social media. The video shows a cop pushing him out of the site. To contain the situation, the goats were taken out of the society.

BJP Mayor's request to BMC

The controversy erupted after Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and several BJP leaders urged the BMC to issue a circular completely banning the sacrifice of goats during Bakra Eid within housing societies.

Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya recently held a meeting with Mayor Ritu Tawde, Civic Standing Committee Chairman Prabhakar Shinde, BJP leader in the BMC Ganesh Khankar, and Citizens' Garden Committee Chairperson Hetal Gala.

Following the meeting, the said leaders wrote to BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, demanding a ban on animal sacrifice in residential areas.

People from the Muslim community have opposed any such circular, warning that it could lead to law and order problems and escalate communal tensions during the festival.

Currently, a tense calm prevails in the Mira Road area. The administration has appealed to both parties to maintain peace. The situation is being monitored.

What did DSP say?

DCP, Mira-Bhayandar, Rahul Chauhan said, "In the Poonam Cluster Society, some residents had brought goats onto the premises for qurbani on Eid ul-Adha. This drew objections from certain other residents. Upon receiving these objections, the administration convened a meeting to discuss the issue. Subsequently, the Municipal Corporation designated a specific location for this purpose. Within the society, a consensus was reached to remove the goats from the premises and relocate them to the site designated by the Municipal Corporation. The goats have now been shifted from the society to the designated municipal site, and there are currently no issues here."
