India Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the southwest monsoon has advanced into the southeast Arabian Sea, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, entire Nicobar Islands and some parts of Andaman Islands including Vijayapuram.
Monsoon Update
As per the weather body, conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance into some more parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal during the next three to four days. The remaining parts of the Andaman Islands and the Andaman Sea, as well as some parts of the east-central Bay of Bengal, may also see the onset of monsoon during this period.
Earlier on Friday, IMD had said that the southwest monsoon is expected to arrive in Kerala on May 26. However, the monsoon usually begins in Kerala on June 1.
IMD also forecast that India is expected to receive below-normal rainfall during this year's monsoon season. This could be due to the emergence of El Nino conditions during this season, which cause low rainfall in the country.
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Chief Mrityunjay Mahapatra said, "In the first forecast for this monsoon, released last month, IMD already considered the probability of emergence of an El Nino during the latter half of the season. However, according to recent predictions, an early El Nino development would significantly impact monsoon rainfall and thus increase the risk of droughts in the country."
Heat Wave Conditions To Prevail In Delhi-NCR, Punjab
According to IANS, the IMD has forecast a sharp rise in temperatures in the NCR over the next few days. Delhi is expected to experience a heat wave on May 17, with maximum temperatures reaching 42 degrees Celsius. The weather body has also forecast a heat wave in Punjab until May 20, and has issued a yellow alert.
