Fast food has become an integral part of modern lifestyles which is enjoyed by everyone from children to senior citizens but it also comes with serious health risks. A family from Burari was left devastated when their 10-year-old daughter’s brain nearly stopped functioning. She began losing memory, couldn’t recall even small things, and eventually found it difficult to walk. Her condition kept deteriorating.

According to jagran.com, medical tests revealed that her liver had failed. Due to the buildup of toxins in her body, her brain developed swelling, and she had to be admitted to the ICU. Doctors linked her condition to frequent consumption of fast food like momos.

Used to Buy Momos with Money from Grandfather

Both her parents are working, and in their absence, the child would often take money from her grandfather to buy momos and other snacks from outside. After surviving the ordeal through plasmapheresis or plasma exchange (a medical procedure that removes harmful substances), she has now completely given up eating momos.

Her mother, Savitri Mathur, said her husband Kishore works in mobile repairs, while she is employed as a caretaker in Mukherjee Nagar. They have two daughters: 10-year-old Tanya and 8-year-old Gauri.

Family Saw Symptoms

The parents said they usually provided home-cooked food, but due to work, they remained out for most of the day. After returning from school, Tanya would buy momos or chips. Initially, she started forgetting things and felt constantly tired.

Her condition worsened to the point where she couldn’t even stand. She was first taken to a nearby hospital, where tests showed severe jaundice. Fearing the worst, the family admitted her to Yatharth Hospital in Model Town.

Doctors Initially Suggested Liver Transplant

Doctors initially recommended the girl undergo a liver transplant, but her condition improved with plasmapheresis treatment. According to pediatric specialist Dr. Shailesh Sharma, nearly 35 per cent of children in Delhi are showing signs of fatty liver.

He noted that fast food, excessive screen time, and lack of physical activity are major causes. Serious liver failure cases are now being seen even in young children, as in this case.

What is Plasmapheresis?

Plasmapheresis is a procedure in which toxic substances are removed from the body by replacing the plasma. Clean plasma is then transfused back into the body.

This helps the liver rest and recover faster. The child required two units of plasma, which helped avoid the need for a liver transplant.

He added that both children and adults in Delhi consume only about 1 to 1.5 litres of water daily, whereas at least 2.5 litres is needed for proper metabolism. Increasing consumption of fast food is also significantly damaging liver health.
