Travel on the first phase of the Ganga Expressway, connecting Meerut and Badaun, will no longer be free for commuters. The route, which was opened on April 29 with a temporary toll exemption till May 14, has now begun charging toll fees from May 15 after operator IRB Infra decided to start collections.
Traffic movement on the expressway has exceeded initial expectations. According to recent data:
-May 11: 18,600 vehicles
-May 12: 17,800 vehicles
-May 13: 16,300 vehicles
On average, close to 18,000 vehicles are travelling on the route every day. Officials also noted that around 20 per cent of the traffic consists of heavy cargo trucks, which is being seen as a positive indicator for trade and economic activity in the region.
