In a tragic incident, a massive fire broke out at the Pachpadra refinery in Balotra, Rajasthan, a day before it was set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Reports indicate that the source of the fire was the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) of the refinery. According to officials, there were no reports of any casualties at this time.
The plant is a Greenfield Integrated Refinery-Cum-Petrochemical Complex located in Balotra, Rajasthan. It is a joint venture between HPCL and the state government. This will drastically improve India's energy security by reducing the amount of fuel that is needed to supply the entire country with energy. Additionally, this will help improve India's ability to meet its own domestic fuel needs.

The project was originally initiated by former President of the Indian National Congress (INC), Sonya Gandhi, during the Ashok Gehlot government in the state in 2013 with an estimated budget of Rs 37,230 crores. Prime Minister Modi relaunched the project in 2018 with additional cost revisions of Rs 43,129 crores, NDTV reported.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma is also scheduled to visit the refinery later on Monday, around 4 pm. The project has an investment of more than Rs 79,450 crore, as per the government.
In addition to producing fuel, the refinery will create substantial growth opportunities for industry throughout the value chain of petrochemical products produced downstream from the refinery. Key raw materials that will be produced at this refinery that will support industries will include polypropylene, polyethene (HDPE/LLDPE), Benzene, toluene, and butadiene.
Manufacture construction materials will be used in many areas of business, from plastic goods to agricultural irrigation piping, packaging machinery and equipment, automotive parts, synthetic fibre, health care equipment or machinery, paints and detergent products.
The integrated complex is expected to create jobs in the state of Rajasthan and increase the capability of that state to be a leader in the production of high-quality manufacturing goods.
