Abhishek Banerjee Attacked: Former West Bengal Chief Minister and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo, Mamata Banerjee on Saturday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party after her nephew and party MP, Abhishek Banerjee, was attacked by locals during his visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas, to meet post-poll victims' families. The rulers became the killers, shame on you, BJP, she said in a post on X. "RULERS BECAME KILLERS- shame on you BJP," her post read.

Reacting to the attack, the TMC, in a note on X, slammed criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, saying the incident exposed the kind of politics the BJP leader presides over - one rooted in intimidation, violence and vendetta.

Earlier, a video emerged on social media showing Abhishek being mobbed and assaulted by a group of angry people. Stones, shoes and eggs were hurled at the TMC MP by unidentified people who even attempted to rain blows and kicks on him, while they shouted 'thief' slogans at Banerjee.

Abhishek's convoy was surrounded by chants of "thief, thief" and "go back." Protesters pelted him with eggs and shoes, shoved him, and even ripped off buttons on his white shirt and tore his clothes. The situation became so uncontrollable that the he had to hastily wear a cricket helmet for his safety. At several points along the route, women waved black flags at him, forcing him to abandon his four-wheeler and take a motorcycle.

Abhishek Meets Sanju Karmakar's Family Members

Before reaching Sonarpur, women in the Kamalgazi area protested by waving black flags. Subsequently, as the TMC MP entered Sonarpur, the protests intensified. Despite the intense opposition, Abhishek finally reached the home of Sanju Karmakar, a Trinamool worker killed in post-election violence. There, he alleged that opposition workers were being targeted in the name of the "double-engine government" in the state. He said that if he had left, the victim's family would have been even more vulnerable.

They Wanted To Kill Me: Abhishek

Reacting to the incident, Abhishek accused the BJP for attacking him. "It's all BJP-sponsored. Look what they have done. This is their example of democracy. It hasn't even been a month, and the police are nowhere to be seen," he said.

Outcome Of Anger Of Locals: BJP's Reaction
BJP West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya said the incident could be the outcome of the anger of locals who were "tortured" over the years.

Congress' Kharge Condemns Attack On Abhishek

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, "Strongly condemn the shocking attack on MP Shri Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, as he went to meet the families affected by post-poll violence in the state."

"The deliberate lack of adequate police protection for a prominent Opposition leader speaks volumes about the BJP's politics of vendetta and persecution," the Congress president said.
