Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday held a massive sit-in protest (dharna) in Kolkata against the alleged post-poll violence against party leaders, including MPs Abhishek and Kalyan Banerjee.
The TMC protest was held at Esplanade's Y-channel after the party was denied permission to hold a sit-in at adjacent Rani Rashmoni Road. While speaking at the sit-in, Mamata took an assertive tone and vowed to fight or die against an attack on party leaders and the forceful eviction of hawkers.
At the dharna site, she chanted, "Ladenge ya marenge (Will fight or die)." She also targeted the BJP government for not granting permission to hold the protest or use a microphone at Tani Rashmoni Road.
"We were not given permission to set up a stage or use microphones," she said, addressing supporters through a megaphone. She also accused the Bengal Police of threatening the TMC leaders. "TMC leaders are being threatened in Bengal by cops," Mamata said.
Warning the BJP, she said, "Don’t bulldoze us or our democracy and Constitution." "Don’t compel us to take a big decision," she added.

Amid attacks on the BJP and the Bengal government, Mamata also indicated a revived unified struggle against the saffron parties in Delhi. She said anti-BJP parties will soon meet in Delhi and decide "on our country-wide course of action".
The protest site was flooded by hundreds of TMC supporters and workers, including Kolkata mayor and MLA Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra, Derek O'Brien, Kalyan Banerjee and Dola Sen.
Abhishek Banerjee was attacked with stones and eggs during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas on Saturday. The incident caused injury to his eye.

A day later, party MP Kalyan Banerjee was also attacked by a crowd. He was hit on the head near Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly on Sunday, when he came to submit a deputation regarding post-poll violence. The angry crowd was heard shouting "chor chor" slogans as they waved black flags at the TMC MP.
