West Bengal: In yet another major jolt to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), a group of dissident MPs are gearing up to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking recognition as the party's 'real TMC' parliamentary faction.

Rebel MPs To Stake Claim As 'Real TMC'

Rebel MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia said that the rebel MPs will meet the Lok Sabha Speaker on Monday, June 15, and stake a claim as the 'real TMC' faction. He stated that the group has already submitted a representation to the Speaker.

Speaking to news agency PTI, Basunia said, "We have submitted the letter… On Monday, we will go to the Speaker and stake our claim to form the real TMC parliamentary group. We will ask the Speaker to give recognition to our claim."

Basunia, an MP from Cooch Behar, is among the rebel MPs supporting the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Lok Sabha. He claimed that 19 TMC MPs have signed the memorandum, adding that the process of collecting signatures began on June 8.

While a list containing the names and signatures of these MPs has been released, the letter to Speaker Om Birla has not been made public. Additionally, according to a Jagran.com report citing sources, the exact timing for the meeting with the Speaker is yet to be finalised.

TMC Crisis

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kirti Azad has alleged that the party's lawmakers are being induced to switch sides. Dismissing these allegations, Basunia said, "Kirti Azad is a liar. It is not right to say that. We are 19 MPs, and he is also just one MP. It is not right to make such allegations."

The political crisis for Mamata Banerjee's party began after a crushing defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections and has since reached the Parliament. On Thursday, actress-turned-MP Koel Mallick became the fourth TMC parliamentarian to resign from both the party and the Upper House, after Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Barik.
