West Bengal: Breaking a long silence following her party's election defeat and subsequent internal rebellion, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Saturday launched a scathing attack on rebel leaders, calling them 'traitors'.
'How Did You Become Traitors Within Two Months?': Mamata Banerjee
Banerjee questioned how rebel leaders who had contested the 2026 Assembly elections on TMC tickets claimed the party had become dysfunctional.
"If that was the case, how did they contest the 2026 elections on the party’s ticket?" she asked.

"The party symbol was given by me. I was the signatory to your nomination papers for the 2026 elections. How did you become traitors within two months of the election? There has to be a limit."
Accusing the rebels of acting in the interest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), she said, "Those traitors are acting according to the BJP's wishes. I would tell them to go and join the BJP directly. TMC’s ideology is anti-BJP."
Banerjee expressed solidarity with the party members who have remained with the party during the ongoing political turmoil.
"I extend my solidarity, salute, congratulations, and best wishes to ordinary people, grassroots workers, and those from the original All India Trinamool Congress who are still with the party and have not betrayed it by seeking shelter in the BJP," she added.
Mamata Accuses BJP Of Looting Votes
The TMC chief'What Do You Think I Am Dead?': Mamata Banerjee Slams Rebels, Dares Them To Join BJP further accused the BJP of 'looting' votes during the West Bengal Assembly election.
"Instead of working for the people, they are creating trouble and terror. False and baseless cases are being slapped on our workers," she alleged.
What Mamata Banerjee Said On Eggs Row?
Banerjee alleged that governance in the state has taken a back seat. "It is sad to see this new culture in West Bengal. Children are not getting eggs in their mid-day meals, while the police are being misused," she said.
She further said, "I do not blame those who are leaving. I know they are under pressure. But neither my party nor I will bow before the BJP."
Mamata Assumes Charge After Chandrima's Resignation
Responding to reports that a rebel faction had taken control of the Trinamool Congress’s Kolkata office, Banerjee clarified that the premises remain under a TMC lease until October 2027. Striking a defiant note, she said, "An individual may leave the party, but the institution does not cease to exist. It is the party’s property. No one can forcibly seize the property of ‘Ma, Mati, Manush’."
Banerjee also confirmed that Chandrima Bhattacharya had resigned as the West Bengal TMC President and she would assume charge of the state unit.
She said, "As the AITC Chairperson, I announce that from today, I will also assume the role of the West Bengal state TMC President. Two more individuals, Madan Mitra and Kunal Ghosh, have been inducted into the party committee. Both have been appointed as General Secretaries of this committee."
