Fire Incidents Rise As Temperature Soars

Fire incidents in the capital city have also seen a surge along with the temperature. In January, the fire service received 1,396 calls. This number increased to 1,096 in February, 1,538 in March, and 2,663 in April.

The situation worsened in May. By May 26, the department had received 2,877 fire-related calls, more than the entire month of April.

Hundreds Of People Rescued

41 people were rescued in January, 46 in February, 68 in March, 119 in April and over 40 in June.

Garbage Fires Pose Major Challenge

Fires in garbage and open spaces remain a major problem in Delhi. There were 441 such incidents in January, 331 in February, 539 in March, and 725 in April. As of May 26 alone, the fire service had to respond to 766 complaints of garbage fires.

Why Are Fire Incidents Increasing?

Fire department officials said rising temperatures and dry weather during summer contribute to increased fire incidents. The risk of fires in open areas, garbage dumps, and power-intensive establishments increases significantly during this period. AC-linked fire incidents also contribute to the rise of fire-related tragedies.

Although fire-related calls and rescue operations increased in May, the number of deaths remained lower than in March. Despite this, the increasing number of incidents raises serious questions about the fire safety system in the capital.
