Major Reforms On Cards? PM Modi To Meet 7 Secretaries-Led Groups Formed During West Asia Crisis

Rajiv Kumar, New Delhi: The Central government is set to undertake major reforms to lift the economy out of the impact of the West Asian crisis and accelerate the achievement of India's goal of becoming a developed country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called a meeting of secretaries from all departments on Tuesday, where they will present their reform proposals.

Following the outbreak of the Iran-US war in late February, the Cabinet Secretary formed seven groups headed by various secretaries. These groups have submitted their reports to the Cabinet Secretary. These reports will be presented to the Prime Minister on Tuesday.

PM's three tasks to the secretaries

According to sources, all secretaries have been given three tasks before attending the meeting. These three tasks will be the main agenda of the meeting.

The first task is to identify any difficulties or obstacles they face in achieving their goals or advancing their department's work and how they can be overcome. Secretaries are also required to provide these suggestions.

The second task is to explain how secretaries can work beyond their own purview. They will also be asked to share this information. The third task is to provide ideas and suggestions for reforms in their own departments, as well as for other departments.

Energy, supply chain, and inflation will be discussed

The formation of these groups was also aimed at enhancing coordination across departments on key issues such as energy, supply chains, inflation, imports and exports, and defence manufacturing. The largest group, headed by Economic Affairs Secretary Anuradha Thakur, has 11 members.

This group will provide suggestions to the Prime Minister on issues such as maintaining the country's macroeconomic stability, import-export, and manufacturing.

Led by Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal, the second group will present its suggestions to the Prime Minister on energy, including LNG, LPG, and petroleum products.

This group also includes the Chief Executive Officers of public sector oil companies involved in petroleum.

A group of secretaries, headed by the Foreign Secretary for Foreign Strategy, and another group of secretaries has been formed, headed by the Defence Secretary.

Preparations are underway for the next phase of reforms

A group led by Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar has been tasked with developing a roadmap for the country's logistics sector. Sources say the next phase of reforms will be based on presentations from all secretaries.

Sources say that while the ease of doing business has seen significant improvements over the past 10 years, investors still face difficulties setting up factories. Overall manufacturing costs can be reduced by improving supply chains and logistics.
