Maharashtra:At least 9 were found dead after a four-storey building collapsed in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi on a late-night Friday, with several people still feared trapped under the rubble. According to the National Disaster Response Force, rescue operations continued on Friday, and three to four more people are feared trapped under the debris.

A portion of the Kohinoor Building in the Balaji Nagar area of the powerloom town collapsed around 11:60 pm on Thursday, according to PTI. Around 9 pm, residents heard "loud cracking sounds" coming from the structure, an official said.

According to Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation Fire Officer Vijay Jadhav, one body was recovered from the rubble, while an injured boy was rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, seven to eight people are believed to be trapped under the debris, and a search and rescue operation is underway.

According to PTI, the structure comprised 48 rooms, with 12 on each floor, municipal officials said. The civic body had earlier declared the building unsafe. The collapse occurred while repair work was underway on the premises.

The Municipal Corporation had already declared the building as 'C-category' (extremely dangerous and dilapidated). However, despite the building being empty, some workers were still working on its ground floor. It is estimated that some workers may still be trapped under the rubble.

Locals immediately helped evacuate several families to safer locations. However, while some occupants were still making their way out, the "B" wing of the building caved in.

Collector Krishna Panchal has reached the accident site to oversee rescue operations, while Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan is also expected to visit the site, officials said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday expressed grief over the building collapse in Bhiwandi, which has claimed nine lives so far. He directed officials to immediately file an FIR and take strict action against those responsible.

In a post on X, Fadnavis called the incident "deeply saddening" and said the state government stands with the families of the victims. "The loss of life due to the building collapse in Bhiwandi is deeply saddening. I express my deepest condolences to them. We share the grief of these families," the chief minister said.

He further said that the municipal commissioner has been ordered to immediately file an FIR in this matter and take strict action against the culprits. The injured are being treated. I pray to God for their speedy recovery.

A rescue operation is underway, including teams from the National Disaster Response Force, the Thane Disaster Response Force, and the local fire brigade.
