In a tragic incident, at least twelve labourers were killed while 20 others were injured on Wednesday night after a pick-up van they were travelling in, overturned and collided with an SUV in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district.
According to a police official, the horrific accident took place between 8:30 PM and 9 PM when 35 labourers were returning home in a pickup van from Baggad in Dhar district.
As per the preliminary information, the driver lost control of the vehicle near Chikliya crossing, after which the vehicle overturned and due to a certain speed, it collided with an SUV coming from the opposite direction.
Speaking about the accident, Dhar district's in-charge collector, Abhishek Choudhary, said that 12 people died on the spot. "Twelve people died on the spot, while approximately 20 others were injured," he said.
Soon after the incident, Choudhary, DIG Mayank Awasthi, and other police personnel rushed to the spot. The injured were taken to the hospital, and those in serious condition were referred to Indore after initial treatment, Choudhary said. The local police have registered a case and started investigating it.
PM Modi, CM Mohan Yadav announce ex gratia
MP CM Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the deaths and announced ex gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh financial aid to those seriously injured and Rs 50,000 each to the injured.
He said, "I have issued directions to provide financial assistance of ₹4 lakh each to the families of the deceased, ₹1 lakh each to the seriously injured, and ₹50,000 each to the injured. The Indore Divisional Commissioner and IG have been instructed to visit Dhar to oversee the treatment arrangements. All injured individuals will receive free treatment."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences on the deaths and announced Rs 2 lakh to each of the families of deceased from the PM National Relief Fund, along with Rs 50,000 to the injured.
"Deeply pained to hear about the loss of lives in an accident in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this mishap. Prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. An ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of the deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000," he said.
