Ladakh Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Monday announced the formation of five new districts in Ladakh. These include Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.

Sharing a post on X, the Lieutenant Governor described the move as a “historic day" for the region. He said that a long-pending demand of the people has been accomplished today.

The LG claimed the move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed and prosperous Ladakh. He added that the decision had already been approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024 under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

As per LG Saxena, the creation of new districts will strengthen grassroots governance, decentralise administration, ensuring faster delivery of public services, particularly in remote and far-flung areas. 

Move Is Expected To Create New Opportunies 

LG Saxena, pointed out that the move is expected to create new opportunities for growth, employment and entrepreneurship, while bringing governance closer to the people.

Reaffirming his commitment, the Lieutenant Governor said efforts would be made to ensure that every citizen of Ladakh benefits from what he termed a transformative decision.

The development followed the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, which ended the special status of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir and divided the region into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

When Will Elections Take Place In Jammu And Kashmir

Additionally, elections in Jammu and Kashmir are expected to take place in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes scheduled for October 4. These elections will be the first since the abrogation of Article 370 and the first in the region in a decade, as the last assembly elections were held in 2014. The previous coalition government of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell apart in June 2018, prompting the need for fresh elections.
