A fresh controversy has erupted in West Bengal after a video showing two girls dancing in towels at a school event has gone viral on social media. The video has become a hot topic of discussion, with concerns being raised over decorum and the sanctity of the educational institution.
The video shows girls, draped in a towel, dancing to a popular Bollywood song, 'Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye' from 'Dilwale Dunhaniya Le Jayenge'.
The video has triggered massive criticism. Some of the X users have even termed the dance 'vulgar' and 'obscene'.
A user on X wrote, "Such vulgarity in the name of a culture program" at a sacred place like a school is truly a matter of concern. Where children should be taught values, art, and self-confidence, if obscenity is served instead, what will society learn?"
The video also got the attention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which has issued a notice to the school, based on a complaint seeking its intervention.
The complainant has alleged that such a type of performance in a school shows "negligence and lack of proper supervision by the school authorities". The complainant further added that it "may adversely affect the dignity and well-being of the children".
The complainant has requested the commission to seek a detailed report by the school and state, adding that guidelines be made for schools and other educational institutions across India to prohibit the "sexualised portrayal" of minor girls in school programs or on digital platforms.
The NHRC has also issued a notice to the Principal Secretary of the Department of School Education, the Commissioner of Police, and the District Magistrate of Kolkata. The commission has issued a direction in its notice to inquire into the allegations and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within two weeks.
