TMC leader Firhad Hakim tendered his resignation from the post of Kolkata Mayor on Wednesday amid a major churn in the party after a setback in the assembly elections.

The decision comes as the Mamata-led party dissolved all committees, except the parliamentary party, amid a rift as 58 MLAs backed expelled rebel Ritabrata Banerjee as LoP. Hakim is a close aide of Mamata, who was seen at the Esplanade protest site alongside her on Tuesday. His resignation, reportedly, was approved by Mamata Banerjee.

Rift among TMC councillors next?

Hakim is also an MLA from the Kolkata Port constituency and would continue to serve in that capacity. His resignation has sparked speculation whether the decision was taken as part of the organisational overhaul strategy, initiated with the dissolution of committees, or a potential rift among the TMC councillors on the lines of legislators.

TMC is currently going through a phase of leadership uncertainty as a rift has widened between Mamata Banerjee and expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee. Earlier in the day, Ritabrata, backed by 58 MLAs, was appointed as LoP by Speaker Rathindra Bose.

He was expelled by Mamata-controlled TMC on Monday after CM Suvendu Adhikari told the media that two TMC MLAs, apparently Ritabra and Sandipan Saha, filed a complaint with the Speaker alleging a fake signature in the second letter submitted by TMC to appoint Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as LoP.

Later, he approached the Speaker with the support of 58 MLAs to get the LoP post. The rebel group has expressed a desire to accept Mamata as an advisor to the TMC parliamentary party but sought accountability from Abhishek Banerjee for the assembly poll setback.

Speaking to the media after his appointment as LoP, Ritabrata said, "We have claimed that the legislative party belongs to these MLAs. Two-thirds of the MLAs who have won in the symbol of the Trinomial Congress. The West Bengal State Legislative Assembly, the Speaker, has granted us our claim. So we want to go one step forward, one step at a time..."

"I have already categorically stated that we will write to Mamata Banerjee to be the chief advisor of the Trinomial Congress legislative party in the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly," he added.
