Karnataka Power Shift: The politics of Karnataka is likely to witness a significant transition with the resignation of Siddaramaiah as the chief minister. DK Shivakumar, another prominent leader, is set to become the next chief minister of the southern state. The close aides of Siddaramaiah, including his son Yathindra, are expected to get key portfolios in the cabinet. With less than two years remaining in the assembly election, Shivakumar is expected to face several challenges.

Cabinet Formation

Shivakumar, who belongs to the Vokkaliga community, is likely to face difficulties in the formation of his cabinet amid demands from all the prominent caste groups and factions. The close aides of Siddaramaiah are also expected to get key portfolios following the transition. Apart from this, the demands of multiple deputy chief ministers are likely to further complicate the cabinet formation.

Ahinda support base

The social coalition, comprising minorities, backward classes, and Dalits, played a key role in the Congress' return to power in 2023 and remains the central pillar of the party's electoral strategy. While Siddaramaiah is considered the de facto leader of the community, Shivakumar will face the challenge to keep the voter base intact. However, Shivakumar enjoys massive popularity in the Vokkaliga community, giving him an edge.

Beneficiary Schemes

The state government is already spending approximately Rs 51,000 crore annually on multiple schemes, including Gruha Lakshmi, Shakti, Anna Bhagya, Yuva Nidhi, and Gruha Jyothi. While these initiatives have received a good response from the public, the economists have raised concerns over the spending.

2028 Assembly polls

With less than two years remaining in the Karnataka Assembly election, Shivakumar will have to form a new strategy for the party and is also likely to deal with the anti-incumbency. However, despite all the challenges, Shivakumar also has opportunities on many ends; he has got the post he was seeking for years.
