Karnataka's long-simmering tussle over the chair of Chief Minister finally saw an end on Thursday when CM Siddaramaiah tendered his resignation to Prabhu Shankar, Special Secretary to Karnataka Governor, at the Lok Bhavan, paving the way for his potential successor, DK Shivakumar.
His resignation is likely to be accepted by late night or tomorrow after Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot returns to Bengaluru from his hometown Indore.
Siddaramaiah held a press conference after visiting the Lok Bhavan. He said that he tendered his resignation as the Congress high command had asked him to do so two days ago.
"High command directed me two days ago to step down; accordingly, I submitted my resignation today. I had said time and again that I will resign whenever the high command tells me,' the chief minister asserted.
What's next for Siddaramaiah?
As the longest-serving CM in the state's history, Siddaramaiah's tenure is now ending, fueling speculations and questions over his next role in politics.
Some reports had earlier suggested that he had been offered a Rajya Sabha seat by Congress to play an active role in national politics.
Speaking about it at the presser, Siddaramaiah said that he was asked to move to Rajya Sabha, an offer which he rejected as he has no interest in national politics.
"They asked me to go to Rajya Sabha, I have politely told them no, saying I want to remain in state politics and I am not interested in national politics," the Karnataka CM said.

On the question of his next role, he added that he still has two years to serve as MLA and will continue in active state politics.
"I have two more years as an MLA, and I will serve my people. I will continue in active politics," Siddaramaiah told reporters.
Protests across Karnataka
Since the buzz around his resignation started on Tuesday, a wave of protest by his supporters has started across Karnataka.
On Wednesday, many of his loyalists protested outside his official residence, Kaveri, in Bengaluru, with sloganeering against the Congress high command. Similar protests were seen in Yadgir, where his loyalists took to the streets and raised slogans against Congress.
