Kanpur’s public transport network is set for a major upgrade with plans to introduce 300 new air-conditioned electric buses (e-buses). Currently, 90 e-buses are already operating from the Ahirwan depot, while authorities are now working to expand the fleet and improve passenger comfort and connectivity.
The new buses will be 28-seater electric vehicles operating within city limits on newly finalised routes. The Directorate of Urban Transport has allocated the buses and issued instructions for infrastructure development, including depots and charging facilities
A modern bus depot will be constructed to support the operation of the new fleet, requiring five acres of land. The Municipal Corporation has started identifying suitable land. After allocation, C&DS (Construction and Design Services) will prepare the DPR and seek government approval and funding.
At present, 90 out of 100 buses are running from the Ahirwan depot, with a load factor of 51-55 per cent. Officials are also preparing a proposal to reduce fares to increase ridership, including a possible minimum fare of Rs 5 for 2.5-3 km, compared to the current Rs 10.
The operation of the new buses is expected to improve mobility while reducing pollution and traffic pressure in the city.
Officials said infrastructure planning is already underway, and land allocation has been prioritised following directions from senior authorities.
Key Features of the Project
- 300 new AC electric buses (28-seater)
- 90 e-buses are already operational from Ahirwan depot
- Five-acre land identified for new depot
- Fare reduction proposal under consideration
