Jagran Correspondent, Kanpur: In a major update for the residents of Kanpur, the state government has approved the extension of metro services from Barra-8 to Naubasta. Apart from this, preparations are reportedly underway to extend the metro to Unnao, Panki, and Chakeri as well. The extension of metro services is likely to provide relief to thousands of commuters by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion in the key regions of the city.
While providing details, the officials stated that the Central Development Authority (CDA) has also begun preparations for six other routes. They further stated that the routes have been identified and a preliminary survey has also been completed. As per the reports, the authority is planning to lay a 150-km metro rail network across the city to boost regional connectivity.

"Considering the city's growing population, traffic pressure, and future transportation needs, the concerned authorities have developed a roadmap for the upcoming expansion of the metro rail project," Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC) Public Relations Officer Panchanan Mishra said.
He further stated that a total of seven potential metro corridors are proposed in the upcoming phases, adding that their total length is 83.658 km. Mishra further stated that the proposal includes 59.648 km of elevated and 24.01 km of underground sections.
Proposed metro corridors:
Naubasta to Barra-8 (Loop Line)- 8.078 km- Completely elevated
Unnao via Gumti Number 5 to Salt Factory Square- 35.81 km- 26.4 km elevated and 9.41 km underground
Naubasta to Chakeri- 14.6 km- Complete underground
Agricultural University to Khyora Katri- 4.39 km- Elevated
Salt Factory to Panki Extension- 6 km- Elevated
Khyora Katri to Trans Ganga Branch Line- 9 km- Elevated
Naubasta to Ramaipur- 5.78 km- Elevated
The officials stated that the metro service is being expanded due to a sudden surge in vehicles in the past few years.
