K Annamalai Factor: K Annamalai, former Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party chief and ex-IPS official, quit the BJP on Friday, saying he embarked on a new political journey aiming to usher in "common man politics," distancing himself from traditional personality-driven politics.

Emphasising the need for such a new political movement, he said it would not be about a name, but an idea. "Let's change ourselves, and change will happen naturally. The movement's core principle is let's change, let's bring change (maruvom, maatruvom)," he said in a video message, outlining his political approach.

Is There Enough Room In Tamil Nadu Politics For New Party?

Recently, actor Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam filled the space vacated for a new party with a fresh ideology in Tamil Nadu, emerging victorious in the assembly elections. The scenario is different for Annamalai. The former cop had been the poster boy of the BJP since he joined the saffron party in August 2020. He is known for his aggressive politics, and under his leadership, the BJP's footprint in Tamil Nadu increased, yet he failed to make it an impactful political force. People know him as a BJP leader, and it is yet to be seen how people take him now. He needs to undergo a makeover to completely shed the BJP colour.

Since he lacks a supporter base and organisational strength, unlike actor Vijay, there is a long way to go for him. In the coming years, he may build a political outfit with his clean image.

Here Is How He May Impact Tamil Nadu Politics

1. Tamil Nadu Pride: Moments after quitting the BJP, Annamalai hinted about his political ideology, emphasising Tamil identity politics. Annamalai claimed he was torn between balancing his identity as a proud Tamilian and being a member of the BJP, a clear hint that he is going to do 'Tamil' identity politics, which is mainly adopted by the DMK and AIADMK in the state.

2. Focus On Local Body Elections: Annamalai proposed a radical restructuring to introduce strict term limits for elected representatives within his future party framework, shifting the focus from the chief minister's office to strengthening over 30,000 local body representatives.

3. Dravidian Politics: In his six-year political career, he has been critical of the policies of both Dravidian parties - DMK and AIADMK. Though he embraces Tamil identity politics, he does not subscribe to the DMK and AIADMK's model to offer freebies.

4. Language Row: He made it clear that his resistance against the Central directive on language policy and interstate water disputes will continue. The former BJP leader said that he would maintain his dual identity as a proud Tamilian and an Indian.

5. Clean Politics: Annamalai strongly opposed when the BJP decided to ally with the AIADMK before the Tamil Nadu elections, citing several corruption-related charges against EPS's party leaders. He has been vocal on corruption against the DMK government as well. Probably, he would induct people with a clean image into his new outfit.
