Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) witnessed tense scenes around midnight on Sunday after a violent clash erupted between the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-affiliated student groups. The confrontation, which unfolded amid growing demands for the Vice Chancellor’s resignation, left several students seriously injured.

According to allegations, students affiliated with Left-wing groups, reportedly armed with sticks, iron rods, and other objects, attacked members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The ABVP claimed that its members were targeted while “peacefully studying” in libraries and school buildings when the violence erupted between 1:00 AM and 1:30 AM.
In a statement posted on social media, ABVP described the incident as “brutal violence,” alleging that several students were severely injured. The group claimed that masked individuals stormed study areas, chased students out of rooms, and assaulted them. ABVP leaders further alleged that some students had to lock themselves inside rooms to escape the mob. They also criticised the response of security personnel and police, alleging inaction during the incident.
ABVP Calls Library Violence ‘Pre-Planned and Orchestrated’
The ABVP dismissed allegations of unprovoked aggression and instead accused Left-wing student groups of carrying out a “brutal” and “targeted” attack on neutral students who were studying in libraries and other school areas. The organisation claimed several students were surrounded and harassed, with some allegedly locking themselves inside rooms to escape the violence.
JNUSU Joint Secretary (ABVP) Vaibhav Meena alleged that masked protesters chased students from study spaces and that an ABVP worker was attacked by a large mob, while police failed to intervene. JNU Media Convener (ABVP) Vijay Jaiswal also termed the incident pre-planned and demanded action from the university administration against those involved.
In a post on X, the ABVP described the events as “cowardly” and “orchestrated,” stating: “Students have been severely injured after a shocking attack by Left-affiliated groups… This is not politics. This is targeted violence against students who came here to study.”
ABVP Alleges ‘Orchestrated’ Attack
Rejecting the allegations, ABVP termed the violence “orchestrated” and accused Left-wing activists of carrying out a targeted assault. ABVP representatives claimed that 300-400 masked individuals unleashed “terror” across the campus and alleged that one student was mob-lynched by a large group. They demanded immediate action from the university administration and the Delhi Police, including arrests and disciplinary measures.
In a social media post, ABVP reiterated that the incident was not a political disagreement but “targeted violence against students who came here to study.”
Demand for Vice-Chancellor’s Resignation
The unrest comes amid heightened tensions over alleged remarks by the Vice-Chancellor regarding the University Grants Commission’s equity regulations. Student leaders have claimed that the remarks were objectionable and hurt the university’s inclusive ethos.

The JNU Students’ Union had organised the “Equality March” to press for accountability and the Vice-Chancellor’s resignation. Protests by expelled student leaders have also been ongoing for several days.
As of now, the university administration has not issued a detailed official statement clarifying the extent of injuries or outlining disciplinary measures following the late-night violence.
