Under its prestigious 'DigiKavach' program, Google, in collaboration with Dainik Jagran and Vishvas News, is spearheading the 'Digital Safety for Senior Citizens: Sach Ke Sathi' campaign. On Tuesday, March 10, a specialised webinar was organised for senior citizens in Lucknow and Noida, where experts from Vishvas News shared vital strategies to identify and prevent digital scams.
During the Lucknow segment, Sharad Prakash Asthana, Deputy Editor at Vishvas News, detailed the growing necessity of digital literacy. Highlighting that most daily routines now begin with a smartphone, he noted a year-on-year rise in mobile-related crimes.
Key Safety Recommendations:
Account Recovery: Always link a secondary email or phone number to social media and Google accounts. This ensures that a recovery code can be sent if a password is forgotten.
Privacy Settings: Asthana advised users to keep photos and videos on "Private" mode. Scammers often steal public media to create fake profiles and solicit money from the victim's contacts.
Data Protection: He emphasised that personal information, OTPs, and passwords should never be shared with anyone.
The Uddeshya Sewa Foundation also supported this event. Its Founder and CEO, Ankit Kumar, observed that individuals in rural areas are particularly vulnerable due to a lack of digital awareness, pledging to further this mission in those regions.
Insights from the Noida Session
In the session dedicated to Noida, Devika Mehta, Deputy Editor at Vishvas News, focused on advanced security features. She recommended using Google's suggested strong passwords and highlighted the utility of 'Passkeys' to provide a higher layer of device-level security. She strongly advised against clicking on suspicious links to avoid phishing scams.
Mehta issued a critical warning regarding AI-driven fraud. She explained how scammers use voice cloning and deepfake videos of celebrities to lure victims into fraudulent investment schemes promising high returns. "Always verify the authenticity of such videos and never transfer money in a state of panic or haste," she said.
Minakshi Tyagi, Founder and Director of the Nari Pragati Social Foundation, noted that senior citizens are increasingly becoming targets of evolving scam tactics and expressed that the program provided essential defence skills for the community.
