At least four people died while several others were missing after a cruise with about 29 on board capsized in the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur. The incident, which took place at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, triggered chaos at the site. Upon receiving information about the incident, the administration, police, and relief teams arrived at the scene.

A search and rescue operation was underway on a war footing, and divers were searching for the missing people. Four bodies have been recovered so far, while 18 people were rescued.

The accident reportedly occurred at around 6 PM on Thursday, when the cruise was carrying tourists to the dam. According to preliminary information, a sudden storm and strong winds caused the cruise ship to lose balance. After this, the boat likely overturned and capsized while people on board started drowning.

Public Works Minister leaves for Bargi

Upon receiving information about the incident in Bargi, Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh, who had returned from Delhi, departed directly for the incident site from Dumna Airport.

What did Jabalpur SP say?

Providing details about the accident, City Superintendent of Police (Bargi town) Anjul Mishra said that 14 people were rescued while 15 to 18 were still missing.

"Four bodies were recovered from the river, while an operation was on in full swing to trace and rescue the missing passengers," he said.

Timeline of incident

5:30 PM: The MP Tourism Department's cruise, carrying 29 passengers, headed for the deep waters of the dam.

5:50 PM: The sky suddenly darkened, and winds near Khamaria Island reached 50-60 km per hour. Waves 4-5 feet high began to rise in the dam.

6:00 PM: The cruise ship was unable to withstand the onslaught of the waves. Captain Mahesh Patel tried to control the cruiser, but water began to fill in above deck. The cruiser tilted to one side and capsized.

6:05 PM: People fell into the water. Some tried to swim to the island, while others held on to the sinking ship, gasping for their last breaths.
