Indian politics has witnessed a significant fall of the regional parties in the recently conducted assembly elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA currently has government in 22 states and Union Territories, 78 per cent of India. Congress, the principal opposition party, has managed to form its government in four states, mainly in the southern region. However, several strong regional parties have lost their ground in recent years, leading to a question: is India moving towards a two-party system?

Fall Of Regional Parties:

Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal: The Mamata Banerjee-led party lost to the BJP in the recently conducted polls in Bengal. It could only manage to win 80 of the total 294 constituencies, with its vote share falling below 40 per cent for the first time in a decade.

DMK in Tamil Nadu: The party faced a humiliating loss in the assembly election and lost its ground to the actor-turned-politician Vijay's TVK. MK Stalin, the party chief and former chief minister, lost to a TVK candidate in Kolathur.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar: The Tejashwi Yadav-led party could only manage to win 25 of the total 243 seats in the 2025 assembly polls, sending a shockwave among the followers. While the RJD ruled Bihar for 15 years under the leadership of Lalu Yadav, the party has lost its ground to the BJP and JDU.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana: It formed a government two consecutive times in Telangana under the leadership of K Chandrashekhar Rao; however, the BRS dramatically lost to the Congress in 2023.

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha: Naveen Patnaik, son of freedom fighter Biju Patnaik, ruled the state straight for 24 years. However, the BJD lost to the BJP in 2024 polls, with Patnaik surprisingly losing his own seat.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh: One of the mightiest parties to fall in recent times is BSP under the leadership of Mayawati. While once the party had a strong grip over the Dalit vote bank, its tally and vote share have significantly fallen in the past few elections.

The BJP has defeated Congress in several states, especially in the north; however, the grand old party has still managed to form their government in some states. The defeat of regional parties leaves them with little scope of growth, as most of them are limited to one state.
