The Opposition INDI Alliance on Wednesday announced to oppose the Women's Reservation Bill, calling it politically motivated. However, the INDI Alliance maintained that it is not against the reservation itself.

The decision was taken after a meeting of the leaders of the alliance in New Delhi. Speaking about the decision, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said the parties have 'reservations' about the manner in which the bill was introduced.

After the meeting, Kharge said, "We are all in favour of the Women’s Reservation Bill. But the way in which they have brought it, we have reservations about that. It is politically motivated." He added that the government's move was aimed at suppressing the Opposition parties.

"They are playing some tricks over delimitation. All parties should unite and fight in Parliament. We will oppose this bill, but we are not against reservation (for women)," the INDIA bloc chairperson.

Kharge further added that the Opposition supports the bill in its earlier form and should be implemented accordingly.

"Though we have supported the Women’s Reservation Bill consistently, we insist that the earlier amendments be implemented," he added.

The earlier amendment mandated it to be implemented after the Census 2027. As the population enumeration exercise has just begun, it is likely to be delayed until the post-2029 general election.

The Centre has called a special three-day sitting of the Parliament from April 16 to 18, during which amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, commonly known as the Women’s Reservation Act, will be taken up to enable its implementation from 2029.

On Tuesday, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Kiren Rijiju said, "No party is opposing the women’s reservation in the Parliament and Assemblies. When we passed this Nari Shakti Adhiniyam in the last Lok Sabha, no political party opposed it. So, in principle and in spirit, everybody is together. In Nari Shakti Vandan dhiniyam, every party is together," he said.
