The Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested a 29-year-old self-styled spiritual guru from Mathura district for allegedly sexually exploiting educated young women by luring them on the pretext of spiritual guidance and better career prospects.
The accused has been identified as Abhishek Mishra, who goes by the name Adikarta Narayan Das (29). He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from IIT Roorkee and was employed at a package of Rs 20 LPA before he moved to Mathura. He was arrested on Monday from his ashram-like residence in Radha Kund.
During his arrest, the police also rescued two young women and a man from the premises and handed them over to their families.
The matter came to light after a 22-year-old B.Sc Nursing student from Chhattisgarh filed a complaint at Govardhan police station on May 25.
In her complaint, the woman alleged she offered her milk, saying that it was a "prasad." However, the milk, according to her, was laced with some intoxicating substance. The victim added that she fell unconscious after drinking the milk and was subsequently raped by him.
Mishra is also said to have recorded obscene photographs and videos of herself. Speaking about the matter, Deputy Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar Singh said the complainant had come to Mathura to visit her elder sister, undergoing training with an oil PSU company. She was also associated with Mishra's religious group.
After the incident, Mishra allegedly threatened her and demanded Rs 5 lakh, warning that he would circulate her videos if she failed to pay.
Based on her complaint, the Govardhan police filed an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The police started an investigation and found out more than a dozen obscene photographs of different men and women on the accused's mobile phone.
How did Mishra operate?
According to police, preliminary findings suggest Mishra used YouTube and other social media platforms to deliver online sermons to attract followers.
He used to target educated women, especially engineers and professionals employed in large companies. He then used to trap, exploit and blackmail them.

According to a report by NDTV, Mishra, upon influencing women, would ask them to marry him as per the Gandharva Vivah ritual, one of the eight classical Hindu marriage procedures involving love and consent.
During interrogation, Mishra allegedly told police that he initially rented a house and later purchased one in the Radha Kund area. A detailed investigation has been launched in the matter, and the accused has been sent to jail.
