AIADMK's Rajya Sabha MP C Ve Shanmugam has stirred a huge controversy with his alleged misogynistic remarks on actor Nayanthara while he was trying to criticise the Tamil Nadu government's outreach campaign ahead of the assembly elections.

A former minister, Shanmugam, was speaking on the CM Stalin-led government's initiative, ‘Ungal Kanavu Sollunga (Tell us your dream). As part of the campaign, DMK volunteers will visit voters' homes to seek suggestions and feedback on governance.

While taking a jab at DMK's initiative, Shanmugam said, "I want Nayanthara, will you fulfil?" "Will he (M K Stalin) fulfil someone's dream to marry Nayanthara?" the AIADMK MP added.

Ironically, Shanmugam was speaking in Villupuram during a state-wide protest against rising crimes against women, deteriorating law and order conditions, and a collapse of governance under DMK.

Villupuram is the home turf of Shanmugam. Shanmugam's remarks drew sharp criticism from the DMK, which called them.

This is not the first instance when the AIADMK has courted controversy over remarks against women's dignity. Last year, he drew sharp criticism after he said that CM Stalin might even "announce a free wife" as part of his poll promises.

Speaking at an AIADMK booth committee training meeting in October last year, Shanmugam said, "Many announcements will come for the elections. They will provide mixers, grinders, goats, cows for free, and why, they might even give a wife for free to each person."

Reacting to his statement, Minister Thirumigu Geetha Jeevan had accused Shanmugam of "demeaning women," saying that his comments exposed "the perversity and malice of AIADMK towards women."
