Vijay Makkal Iyakkam: Vijay, who stunned biggies - the DMK and AIADMK in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026, is set to take the oath of chief minister of the state on May 7, sources said. Vijay, also known as Thalapathy, steered his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to win 108 seats out of the 234 assembly constituencies. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.

Once Subjected To Mockery, Now, Set To Form Govt

Just a few months ago, in February this year, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) mocked TVK founder Vijay, questioning the actor's contribution to the development of the state. "Tamil Nadu is number one in GDP because of Vijay. And everybody is getting an education. He had done a lot of good things for the people of Tamil Nadu. And when he is sleeping soundly, he thinks the chief minister will ask people to vote for him," DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan sarcastically said. Now, Vijay is set to form the government in the state. The former actor himself won from two seats - Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East - where he contested.

The TVK has clocked nearly 35 per cent (34.92) vote share in its debut polls. This will be the first time in Tamil Nadu that a party will assume power a little over two years after its founding in February 2024.

VMI

Vijay's ascendance over the Tamilian political landscape looks no less than a fairy tale, but is it really so? The answer is a big no because it was not a miracle or luck factor, but a result of a long-term plan to transcend stardom into political power.

What Is Vijay Makkal Iyakkam?

Vijay chalked out his political plan not in 2024 with the formation of TVK, but 17 years ago, when he created Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VMI) - a social welfare organisation, which means Vijay's People Movement in July 2009. The VMI aimed to reshape his massive fan clubs and develop them into a professional and well-structured network. The VMI was the first but most significant step toward achieving the political ambitions to bring a change in the state polity.

In 15 years, the VMI prepared the electoral ground and organisational infrastructure to launch a political outfit, the TVK. The VMI covered a range of social work from free canteens, study centres, blood donation camps, to disaster relief operations. According to media reports, there were approximately 85,000 fan club units across the states. When VMI built a perfect launching pad for a political party, the actor restructured his VMI into the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam on February 2, 2024, with the vision: Pirappokkum Ellaa Uyirkkum, which means all are equal by birth.
