Amid sizzling hot temperatures across north India, Thursday was no different as the entire region remained under the grip of severe heatwave conditions. Banda, a Uttar Pradesh district which made headlines by becoming the hottest place in the country, remained at the top spot for the fourth consecutive day.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Banda recorded a maximum temperature of 48.2 degrees Celsius. The district has been the hottest for four days with temperatures hovering over 45 degrees Celsius for almost a week.

Explaining the reason behind the unwanted record of the district, meteorologist Dr Dinesh said to ANI, "Key reasons include direct sunlight due to proximity to the Tropic of Cancer, clear skies, plateau terrain with low soil moisture, drying rivers, deforestation, and mining."

Meanwhile, no respite is expected from the rising mercury till next week. The IMD in its latest update said that the weather in north India will mostly remain dry with clear skies and worsening impact of the heat till May 27.

A red alert for an intense heatwave is in place till the next three days, followed by an orange alert.

In Banda, residents were spotted consuming sherbet from the roadside stalls and drinking water to battle the scorching weather-related dehydration risks.

While talking to news agency ANI, a local named Puneet Saxena termed the adverse weather an 'Agni Pariksha'. He said, "It is scorching hot in Banda right now. It is a sort of 'Agni Pariksha' for Banda residents. I believe the reason for this rise in temperature is trees being cut down and illegal mining. Stone and sand mafia operate here."

Weather in UP and Delhi

In UP, the met centre in Lucknow said that hot and dry westerly winds over the southern part of the state, while moisture-laden easterly winds in the northern part of the state have led to a rise in heat and humidity.
