Haryana: Thieves Steal Silver Jewellery From Shiv Temple, Metres Away From Police Station In Karnal, Take Away DVR Of CCTV

Jagran Correspondent, Karnal | Thieves stole jewellery worth lakhs from the Shri Shiv Sanatan Temple, located just ten steps from the Sector 9 Police Station, Karnal, Haryana. During the crime, they locked the temple watchman in his room from the outside, damaged the CCTV cameras, and took the DVR to conceal their identity.

The incident came to light early Monday when a woman arrived at the temple to offer water to the Shivalinga on the first Monday of Sawan. She found the door of the watchman's room locked from the outside and unlocked it to let him out.

Police Launch Probe

Police were informed. Police arrived at the scene and began an investigation. Footage from nearby CCTV cameras is also being examined. The police have registered a case against the unidentified thieves and begun an investigation.

The temple watchman, Ram Vilas, said he was awake until about 1.30 am. He went in his room to rest due to a cold and fell asleep. During this time, thieves entered the temple premises. They broke the lock of a door in the temple committee office, entered through a window, and committed the theft.

The thieves took seven or eight silver crowns, a silver umbrella, a Sheshnag, and other precious religious ornaments from the idols, estimated to be worth around five lakh rupees.

Ram Vilas said when he woke up around 3 am, his room door was locked from the outside. About an hour later, a woman who arrived at the temple heard him open the door, revealing the theft.

The theft at the temple on the first Monday of the month of Sawan has caused widespread resentment among devotees. Local resident Pawan Sharma and others said the theft at a temple so close to a police station raises questions about law and order.

They said the miscreants not only committed theft but also broke the CCTV cameras and took the DVR, preventing their identification. Residents have demanded the police swiftly arrest the accused and strengthen the temple's security.
