Haryana Farmers Protest: The farmers' associations across Haryana staged a massive protest on Saturday against the newly announced rules for crop procurement in the Rabi season. While protesting under the banner of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), the farmers staged protests in several districts between 12 PM and 4 PM. The protesters blocked highways and warned of a large-scale protest across the state if their demands are not addressed. However, the Haryana government has stated that the new rules have been introduced to improve transparency in the mandis.
What Are The Key Provisions?
- To avoid the overcrowding, the farmers must book their slots before arriving at the mandi
- The only farmers with registration on the 'Meri Fasal-Mera Byora' portal will be allowed to sell their crops in the mandi. As per the authority, the change has been introduced to recognise the genuine farmers
- Only vehicles with proper registration will be allowed an entry and the farmers will be required to share the number plate details; however, the farmers pointed out that several tractors do not have any vehicle plates
- The government has asserted that the crop quality must be maintained, adding that the crops containing moisture beyond the allowed limit can be rejected by the authorities
- The payment will be transferred to the bank accounts of the farmers within 72 hours of the crop purchase
While speaking on the issue, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini stated that the rules have been introduced to curb irregularities in mandis. "These measures are aimed at improving transparency, ensuring accountability, and curbing irregularities in mandis," Saini stated.
"These steps are intended to strengthen the procurement system rather than create difficulties for farmers," the chief minister added. He further asked the opposition parties to not spread misinformation related to the newly introduced rules.
