Guwahati-Silchar Expressway: In a major update for the commuters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday laid the foundation stone of the much-awaited Guwahati-Silchar Expressway. The officials stated that the project will boost the regional connectivity, adding that it will cut the travel time between the two cities significantly. The project will also reduce the traffic congestion in these cities, along with boosting the financial activities. Earlier on Friday, PM Modi also flagged off three new trains aimed at boosting connectivity in Northeastern states.
Guwahati-Silchar Expressway Details:
- The total length of the expressway will be 166.8 kilometers
- The officials stated that the total estimated cost is Rs 22,864 crore
- The expressway will act as a crucial lifeline between the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys
- It will reduce the travel distance from Guwahati to Silchar by 25 per cent
- The expressway will cut the travel time by 4 to 5 hours
- It will also reduce fuel consumption significantly
- The project will generate around 8.9 million person-days of employment, informed the officials
Earlier on Friday, the prime minister inaugurated the Guwahati-New Jalpaiguri Vande Bharat Express to boost the railway infrastructure in the northeast region. The train will strengthen connectivity between the Northeast and North Bengal, offering faster and more comfortable journeys for students, business travellers and tourists.
The officials stated that the semi-high-speed train will connect Guwahati in Assam and New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. They further stated that the train will stop at several stations, including Kamakhya, Rangiya, New Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Gossaigaon Hat, New Alipurduar and New Coochbehar.
PM Modi also slammed the Congress by alleging that the grand old party did nothing for Assam, adding that every state has been rejecting the party. "You have ousted the Congress from Assam. Today, every state in the country is teaching the Congress a lesson. The Congress is losing election after election," PM Modi stated.

"In the near future, Congress is poised to hit a century of defeats. Driven by the desperation of defeat, the Congress has launched an offensive against the nation itself," he added.
