Surat Road Accident: At least seven people were killed and 24 injured after two luxury buses collided near Uva village, Bardoli in the Surat district, Gujarat, on Tuesday. Police said the tragic accident occurred when two buses of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation collided head-on, causing several deaths. The crash of buses took place on National Highway 53 near Uva village in Bardoli taluka, trapping several passengers inside, officials said.

Seven people were killed and over 24 injured as two buses collided near Surat, they said. According to initial reports, five passengers died on the spot in the horrific accident, while several others are suspected to be seriously injured.

Bus Catches Fire

The collision between the two Maharashtra Pass buses passing near Uva village was so severe that one bus overturned on the road. As soon as the accident occurred, the overturned bus suddenly caught fire. The entire bus was engulfed in flames, causing widespread commotion and screaming at the scene. The fire in the bus made it difficult to rescue the passengers trapped inside. The front portion of the second bus was also destroyed in the horrific collision.

"Both buses belonged to the Maharashtra state transport corporation. At present, it is not clear whether it was a head-on collision or both buses were going in one direction. After the accident, one of the buses overturned and caught fire," Bardoli Rural police inspector PN Jadeja told reporters.

While at least five people were killed on the spot, more than 20 others were injured in the accident and referred to hospital, he added.  Police teams from Surat and neighbouring Tapi district rushed to the spot after receiving information about the accident.

Upon receiving news of the incident, teams from the Bardoli Fire Department and a convoy of local police arrived at the scene.

Firefighters have brought the fire under control and have launched a rescue operation to bring out those trapped inside. The injured are being shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, officials said. Given the current critical condition of a few passengers, there are fears that the death toll may rise further.
