Gandhinagar: Gujarat Police have launched a large-scale crackdown titled ‘Operation Delta’ across several cities to identify and detain illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in the state. The drive, described as one of the biggest enforcement actions in recent years against illegal infiltration, has led to the identification of hundreds of individuals.

Gujarat Launches ‘Operation Delta’

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Tuesday stated that ‘Operation Delta’ was launched in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, and Morbi to identify Bangladeshis residing illegally in the state. The police have so far identified 362 Bangladeshis, and strict legal action will also be taken against those who facilitated their settlement and provided them assistance.

362 Bangladeshis Identified

Sanghavi added that no political connections involving the infiltrators have come to light so far. Speaking to journalists at the Swarnim Sankul-1 complex in Gandhinagar, Sanghavi informed that under the leadership of Director General of Police (DGP) Dr K Lakshminarayan Rao, the state police formed various teams across Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, and Morbi to apprehend 700 suspects residing illegally.

Of these, 362 were identified as Bangladeshis. This operation marks the largest such drive in Gujarat since the action taken last year against Bangladeshi infiltrators residing near Chandola Lake.

During the operation, blockades were established across districts, highways, railway stations, and bus terminals to prevent the infiltrators from escaping. In major cities, police gathered the illegally residing individuals, including men, women, children, and youth at designated locations to verify their documents. Many infiltrators were found to possess fraudulently obtained Aadhaar cards and ration cards. They will be soon deported with assistance from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Sanghavi noted that while illegal infiltrators are being removed from West Bengal, they will now be identified and expelled from every corner of Gujarat as well. Sharad Singhal, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), also stated that approximately 465 infiltrators were deported from Chandola Lake in Ahmedabad last year.

Last night, around 300 individuals, both men and women were brought in from the area for questioning, and 166 of them have been confirmed as Bangladeshi nationals. Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot added that under ‘Operation Delta,’ police apprehended 240 suspects and scrutinised their documents; of these, 85 were found to be Bangladeshi.
