For passengers heading to Haridwar for the Ganga Dussehra festival on May 25, the Northern Railway has introduced a special unreserved train service. The decision was made keeping in mind the large number of pilgrims that usually flock to the city, especially on the banks of the Ganga, when lakhs and lakhs of devotees assemble here for sacred bathing.
Special train number 04308/04307 would run on May 25 and 26 and would bring in people from Delhi and other nearby cities. The train is an entirely unreserved service to ferry the extra number of devotees expected.
According to the schedule, train number 04307 would depart from Delhi Shahdara station at 11:30 PM on May 25th and arrive at Haridwar station around 4:15 AM. The return journey, from Haridwar, would start around 3:45 PM and arrive at Delhi Shahdara at 9:30 PM on both dates.
The special train would halt at the stations:
- Roorkee
- Tapri
- Shamli
- Baraut
- Baghpat Road
- Noli
Another special train service between Haridwar and Lucknow has also been put in place by Northern Railway in view of the heavy traffic expected during Ganga Dussehra.
Ganga Dussehra is celebrated on the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, and this year, the same will fall on May 25. Bathing in the Ganga on this particular day is said to absolve one of sins. At present, huge crowds of devotees from throughout India have gathered at Har Ki Pauri and other major ghats at Haridwar right from the early morning hours.
Bathing rituals and donation would continue throughout the day, while the evening Ganga Aarti will be held in grand style. The lamps would be offered at the ghats during the Aarti.
