Cauvery Dispute: DMK Moves To Supreme Court, Seeks Release Of Water For Tamil Nadu From Karnataka

The Cauvery water dispute has once again reached the Supreme Court. The DMK on Saturday filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Karnataka government to release Cauvery water from Biligundlu to Tamil Nadu.

The petition said the Karnataka government should follow the final verdict of the Supreme Court in 2018 and the recent order of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).

The DMK urged the court to order Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water per day for the next 15 days, and also to release 7,000 cusecs per day to cover the backlog created by the lack of releases despite the authorities' directives.

The petition also demanded that the Cauvery Water Management Authority be ordered to monitor the implementation of these instructions. It is noteworthy that the Cauvery Water Management Authority had recently accepted the recommendations of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee and directed Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu for the next 15 days.

In its plea, DMK has sought the directions for Karnataka too implement the directions of Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC). Th DMK stated, "Direct the State of Karnataka / Respondent No. 1 to forthwith and fully implement the direction of the CWRC dated July 28, 2026, as affirmed by the CWMA on July 30, 2026, by ensuring a flow of 3,500 cusecs per day at Biligundlu for the period of 15 days commencing from date of the order passed by this Hon''ble Court, and to make good the shortfall in compliance from July 29, 2026 onwards."

Notably, Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), on recommendations of CWRC, has directed Karnataka to release 500 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu for the next 15 days.

The order came into effect from July 29. The Tamil Nadu government had requested the release of 7,000 cusecs of water daily for 15 days, a demand rejected by the authority.
