Delimitation Bill 2026: There is a strong possibility that the number of Lok Sabha seats in Delhi will increase from 7 to 11. The Centre is working on a plan to increase the total number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816, in which Delhi will also receive additional seats proportionally. This change could include approximately 4 seats reserved for women.
When will the new seats be implemented?
This process will be implemented under the new delimitation process, which is expected to begin in 2026-27 based on the 2011 census. The new seats will be implemented before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. This will increase Delhi's political representation and strengthen women's participation.
Number Of Delhi Assembly Seats To Increase To 105
With the delimitation, the number of seats in the Delhi Assembly could also increase from 70 to approximately 105. This change is being considered an important step towards making democracy more inclusive, although concerns are also being expressed about population control in southern states. Overall, this expansion seems appropriate considering Delhi's population growth.

Meanwhile, the government is taking major steps to implement 33% reservation for women in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies as soon as possible. A three-day special session of Parliament has been convened from April 16 to 18, where constitutional amendments and related bills will be introduced.
33% Reservation For Women: Preparations To Implement From 2029
The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Act, passed in the Parliament in September 2023, is now set to be amended. The original law provided for the implementation of the reservation after the upcoming census and delimitation, which could have delayed it. Now, the government is introducing three bills, the main objective of which is to make the reservation effective from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce these bills in Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to all parties to pass this bill unanimously. MPs have also received a copy of the bill.
Delimitation and Expansion of Seats
A new delimitation is needed to implement reservations without delay. The proposed changes include increasing the total number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816, with approximately one-third (273) reserved for women. An increase in Lok Sabha seats is also possible in places like Delhi.
The government is considering conducting delimitation quickly based on the 2011 census, so that women can receive reservations in the 2029 elections. Previously, this process would have begun after the 2027 census, which could have caused significant delays.
What is the Nari Shakti Vandan Act?
The Act provided for the reservation of one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. Women's quotas are also included within reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). The original law was passed unanimously in 2023, but implementation was delayed. The passage of these amendments in the special session is expected to lead to a historic increase in women's political participation. This move is considered a major reform towards women's empowerment.
