A new welfare scheme aimed at supporting girls' education has been introduced in the national capital. The initiative, called Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana, was formally launched on March 2 by President Droupadi Murmu.
The programme is designed to provide long-term financial support to girl children in Delhi while encouraging families to keep their daughters in school.
Under the scheme, financial assistance is deposited in stages as the child progresses through different milestones in her education. The government contributes a total of Rs 56,000 in phased instalments. With interest accumulated over the years, the amount is expected to grow to more than Rs 1 lakh by the time the beneficiary reaches adulthood.
Officials say the structure of the scheme is meant to address several challenges at once — from improving school retention to discouraging early marriage and creating financial security for girls as they enter adulthood.
The payments are linked to key educational milestones. These include school admission stages and academic progress during secondary education. The final benefit is released once the beneficiary reaches the required age and completes her education requirements.
The initiative is also expected to operate through a digital system, with funds transferred directly into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. Authorities say this will help make the process more transparent and reduce paperwork delays.
Eligibility for the scheme depends on several factors. Families must be residents of Delhi, and the girl child must be born in the city. The annual family income must fall within the prescribed limit, and the benefit is typically restricted to two daughters per household.
The government is expected to begin accepting applications for the scheme starting April 1 through an online portal.
Officials say the programme replaces earlier girl child support initiatives and introduces a more structured financial roadmap, designed to support a girl’s journey from birth through higher education.
With the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana now launched, the Delhi administration is positioning the scheme as a long-term investment in education and financial independence for young women in the capital.
