Delhi: Heavy Rains Expose Infra Failures Ahead of BRICS Summit; Lutyens, Airport And CP Severely Waterlogged

Jagran Correspondent, Delhi: The preparation for the BRICS summit in Delhi is in its final stage, but the continuous intense rainfall has raised concerns for the authorities. Earlier on Friday, several parts of the capital city witnessed waterlogging due to the heavy rain. While the authorities have claimed that arrangement has been done for the challenging situations, the waterlogging, especially in the high-profile regions, remains a major concern.

Several Regions Witness Waterlogging

The heavy rainfall on Friday caused waterlogging in some of the prominent regions, including the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and several parts of Lutyens Delhi. The NDMC employees managed to remove the water from these regions, but they could only begin the works after the rain ended. The traffic movement remained slow despite the holiday of Janmashtami, leading to frustration among the commuters.

As per the reports, the agencies are concerned about the possible embarrassment that could happen if a similar situation occurs during the summit in front of the foreign delegations. The central parts of Delhi, such as Connaught Place and Pant Marg, witnessed severe waterlogging due to the lack of proper drainage during the rains. Apart from this, several regions of ITO, Sadar Bazaar, and Chandni Chowk also remained affected.

Similar Situation In Central, Southern Parts

Earlier on August 25, the NDMC chairman had apologized for the waterlogging between Baba Kharag Singh Marg and Connaught Place. However, the region witnessed a similar condition on Friday, raising questions about the preparation by the authorities. The locals stated that the water began entering the roadside shops due to the heavy rainfall.

Apart from this, several regions of South Delhi, including Sangam Vihar, Deoli, Khanpur, Sainik Farms, Badarpur, Mithapur Chowk, and Garhi Village, also witnessed similar issues on Friday. The residents have been advised to follow the guidelines and plan their travel accordingly to avoid inconveniences.
