As part of extensive planning for distribution throughout the ‘Capital’, the Government of Delhi plans to add 4 lakh new connections to its existing 18 lakh connection service, thereby making thousands of households switch from their current LPG cylinder service to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) service.
To accelerate this service rollout and extend it further into the capital territory, the Delhi Government wants to simplify and speed up the process for providing PNG services to homes.
According to NDTV, Minister Ashish Sood reviewed PNG services on Monday and directed staff to make the PNG connection process simpler, clearer and easier to use by citizens.
"The process of providing PNG connections should be made simple, transparent, and citizen-friendly," Sood said.
Currently, there are approximately 14 lakh PNG connections in operation. The focus of the Delhi Government is now to fill in the remaining uncovered homes and to reach out with PNG service to those who are still receiving LPG cylinders.
Currently, the PNG service provides an average of 10,000 new connection installations every month; however, the plan is to increase this to 25,000 per month in order to increase the speed of service rollout. An important part of the rollout strategy for a project of this size is door-to-door advertising in order to encourage residents of homes to convert to using PNG services, particularly for residents who may not be aware of PNG or do not have access to PNG. In locations without existing pipeline in service (such as unauthorised colonies and rural areas), an increased amount of marketing will be expended to encourage residents to use the PNG service.
Additionally, to address the challenges faced by local businesses and residents, such as limited roadway space due to buildings being constructed within narrow streets, multi-storied buildings are also going to be addressed to make it easier for staff to place pipelines in proper configuration.
The government aims to broaden the use of PNG in some local authority buildings (eg, night shelters, community meal programmes, and Atal Canteens) as well as public facilities (eg, municipal buildings). There is a broader directive to expand the use of PNG into commercial properties (eg restaurants, hotels, and places of worship) and public places (eg, parks, etc.) across the city.
Unlike LPG cylinders, which need to be refilled when empty, PNG has an uninterrupted supply.
How to apply for PNG in Delhi:
To apply for a PNG connection in Delhi, residents must apply through Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), which is the only PNG supplier that serves Delhi.
- Online: By completing a new connection application form on the IGL website, residents can apply for a new PNG connection by submitting an application and uploading any necessary documents.
- Offline: Residents can also apply for PNG connections by visiting an IGL office or designated centre.
- Identification and address verification documents are required when applying for a new PNG connection.
After applying, IGL will conduct a feasibility study and then complete the installation of the pipeline and meter as soon as possible, depending on the availability of service in the area.
