Jagran Correspondent, Dehradun: A 24-year-old woman died by suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence in Uttarakhand's Dehradun. She was preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) on June 21 after taking the exam on May 3, which was later cancelled.

The woman, who was a resident of Chandrabani area, has been identified as Riya Kumari Thapa. Her father was a 1999 Kargil War veteran.

Riya had also secured Rank 1 after topping school with 97 per cent in Class 12. She had not cleared the medical entrance in the first attempt.

Police also found a suicide note at the scene. The woman wrote, "I am a burden to you. Please forgive me." Police have sent the body to Coronation Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

On Tuesday morning, the Patel Nagar police station received information from the control room that a young woman in the Chandrabani area was not opening her door. Upon receiving the information, a police team arrived at the scene and broke open the door to find the woman hanging from a ceiling fan.

During questioning, relatives revealed that Riya was preparing for various competitive exams while also pursuing her studies. The police are investigating the motive behind the suicide.

In another incident on Tuesday, a 22-year-old NEET-UG aspirant in Rajasthan's Sikar died by suicide. The police claimed that the deceased student was a resident of Jhunjhunu district. He was scheduled to appear for the NEET re-examination. This year was his third attempt.

The investigating officer Rajesh Kumar Budania, claimed that the student stayed in a rented apartment in Sikar. His father works in Mumbai and had rented the flat for the children's education. On Monday morning, the student returned to Sikar from his native village to visit his mother. When his siblings returned home, they found him hanging from a noose.

The cops recovered a suicide note from the aspirant's room, which read, 'I am going far away.' I don't know where I am going. Sorry..." Police suspect the student was under severe mental stress due to having to take the exam for the third time and having the paper cancelled.
