Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday claimed that over the past decade, West Bengal's people have faced "misrule, corruption and lawlessness" which took away their basic rights.
In an open letter extending Poila Baisakh greetings in Bengali, Modi said he prayed to Goddess Kali for the prosperity, progress and bright future of the people of the state.
He said, "Over the past decade, the people of West Bengal have faced misrule, corruption and lawlessness which have taken away basic rights and safety."
The PM further said the prevailing situation had impacted women's safety, youth employment and the rights of the poor.

Modi urged people to come together to build a state where "the poor have shelter, food security is ensured, women feel safe, and youth can find jobs without leaving the state."
He said under a BJP government, West Bengal would move forward in step with national development and reclaim its historical legacy as a leading state in the country.
Describing the upcoming Assembly polls as not just an election but an opportunity for "real change," Modi urged voters to make a decisive choice for the future of the state.

He called upon citizens to participate actively in the democratic process and support the vision of a developed West Bengal.
Modi expressed confidence that the "people of the state would place their trust in the BJP and help it achieve a significant mandate in the elections."
