A new political controversy has erupted ahead of the Assam Assembly elections as Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife holds multiple foreign passports. The accusation drew a sharp response from a BJP leader, who threatened legal action.

During a press conference, Pawan Khera claimed to have documents proving Sarma's wife, Rinki Bhuyan Sarma, held three passports.

Khera said, "We have documents which show that Rinki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, holds three passports. The first is a UAE Golden Card, the second is a passport from Antigua and Barbuda, and the third is an Egyptian passport."

While Khera was speaking, documents he cited were being shown on a big screen behind him. Khera went on and said, "Two of these passports are from Islamic countries, yet they continue to publicly claim their religious affiliation."

Indicating towards the screen, Kheda said, "You are seeing the pictures of Chief Minister Himanta and his wife. Their names have been linked to several allegations like land grabbing, misappropriation of temple money, misappropriation of government subsidies and chit fund scams. But today, the documents we are presenting are directly related to cases outside India."

The allegations are a big retort by Congress ahead of the assembly elections, especially in light with CM Himanta's continuous attacks on Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi over alleged links to Pakistan.

Responding to allegations, CM Himanta dismissed them outright, calling them politically motivated.

He added that he and his wife would file a defamation case against Khera within 48 hours. "Pawan Khera's press conference today reflects the deep frustration and panic within the Congress party. As Assam moves decisively towards a historic mandate, such desperate and baseless attacks only expose their weakening support base," he wrote on X.

"My wife and I will file both criminal and civil cases against Pawan Khera within the next 48 hours. He will be held fully accountable for his reckless and defamatory statements," CM Himanta said.

He said, "I have full faith in the court. Once the truth is proven in court, Pawan Khera will face the consequences for his actions, and the law will take its course. I am confident that Pawan Khera's campaign of lies is now nearing its end. Khera will finally go to jail."

Gaurav Gogoi also targeted the Chief Minister, saying, "Shocking allegations have surfaced regarding Himanta Biswa Sarma. Holding multiple passports and failing to disclose his assets is a serious and criminal offence. How much money has he transferred from Assam to his bank accounts abroad? Further investigation is needed."
