Congress Announces Conditional Support To Vijay's TVK In Tamil Nadu; What DMK Said On Ally's Move

Tamil Nadu Govt Formation: Reflecting a major shift in Tamil Nadu's polity, Congress, an ally of MK Stalin's DMK in the INDIA bloc, announced on Wednesday that it would support Vijay's Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). A letter was issued by the Congress stating that the people of the state have given the TVK a clear, strong, and overwhelming majority.

Keeping people's decision in mind, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislature Party have decided to support the TVK in forming the government, it added. The TVK performed exceptionally well in its first election, winning 108 seats in the 234-member assembly. Vijay's TVK emerged as the biggest fight, marking the end of the dominance of Dravidian politics led by the DMK and the AIADMK in the state.

Conditions' Conditional Support

The grand old party lent its support to the TVK, but with some conditions. The Congress said its support will remain as long as the TVK does not include any communal forces in its alliance. The party clarified that the alliance will be formed only with parties that believe in the Constitution. The Congress also asserted that this alliance will work to advance social justice and the values of the Constitution, including the ideals of Periyar and Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar.

Congress-TVK Alliance Contest Future Elections

The Congress indicated that the alliance will not be limited to forming the government, but will also continue in the upcoming Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and local body elections.

DMK Takes Swipe At Congress

Speaking on TVK to form a government in Tamil Nadu in alliance with Congress, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said the grand old party does it in every state, which is why it is being decimated.

“Right from the beginning, there were talks that some people wanted to support Vijay and join his party. Congress is doing it in every state, and ultimately, they are losing in all of them. They are wiped off in Delhi and West Bengal. They have no chance in Maharashtra. They are doing something which will close their party,” he added.
