  1. CJP called off September 5 Delhi protest.
  2. Supreme Court quashed all student protest FIRs.
  3. Centre assured no new cases, compensation for victims.

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Tuesday called off its proposed September 5 protest march in Delhi after the Centre assured the Supreme Court that it would not pursue cases filed against protesters in connection with the party’s July 20 protest in the Capital. However, the apex court permitted the Central Government and Delhi Police to register FIRs against the 2,873 individuals in accordance with law.

The Supreme Court quashed all FIRs registered against protesters between July 20 and July 25. The court further directed that all cases filed against students in connection with the protests across states and Union Territories would stand quashed.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), CJP wrote, " The Union Govt has guaranteed before the Supreme Court that all FIRs filed against students for peaceful protests over the NEET paper leak will be withdrawn, along with compensation to the families of students who died by suicide. The September 5 march has therefore been called off.".

The apex court's order came after the Centre assured it that cases filed against protesters in connection with the July 20 CJP protest would be withdrawn and that no new cases would be filed in the future in connection with the same protest.

What SC Said?

The Supreme Court said that the Central Government and the applicant states had consciously decided not to proceed with the FIRs so that students and youth who participated in the protests would not face consequences merely for taking part in the demonstrations.

The court observed that "mere participation in protests shall not be taken as an offence" and directed that the FIRs covered by its order would not be pursued.

However, the Delhi Police sought an exception in the case of 2,873 individuals in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, citing their alleged criminal antecedents as reflected in the national database. The SC permitted the Central Government and the Delhi Police to register FIRs against the 2,873 individuals in accordance with law.

What Union Minister JP Nadda Said

Union Minister JP Nadda welcomed the CJP's decision to call off its September 5 protest in Delhi following the Supreme Court's order.

Reacting to the development, Nadda said that FIRs lodged against those who participated in the CJP-led protest would be withdrawn and that no stringent action would be taken against them.

Nadda also said that the welfare and progress of the country's youth remained the government's utmost priority.

How CJP Reacted to Fresh SC Probe Against 2,800 Protesters

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) Chief Spokesperson Saurav Das on Tuesday said the Supreme Court has directed the registration of a fresh FIR in Delhi to investigate around 2,800 alleged hardened criminals who were identified through facial recognition technology as being present at the Jantar Mantar protest site.

Das said the matter was discussed during negotiations with the government after the Delhi Police raised concerns over the presence of the alleged criminals at the protest site.

This comes after the Supreme Court on Tuesday invoked its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to quash FIRs registered in connection with pan-India protests held between July 20 and 25 over the NEET 2026 examination, after the Centre gave assurances before the court on demands raised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

"Regarding the Delhi Police's apprehension, based on facial recognition technology, that around 2,800 alleged hardened criminals were present at the protest site, we argued during negotiations with the government that if these 2,800 hardened criminals were indeed present, the first question was why they were roaming freely in society in the first place," Das told reporters here.

He said that if any of the identified individuals were involved in serious offences at the protest site, they should face investigation and legal action.

"Secondly, if they committed any heinous crimes, such as rape, murder, or other grave offences, at the protest site, then they should be prosecuted, investigated, and imprisoned," he said.

Das said the Supreme Court has now ordered that a separate FIR be registered in Delhi to investigate the identified individuals.

"Consequently, the Supreme Court has ordered that a separate, fresh FIR be registered in Delhi to investigate the around 2,800 identified hardened criminals. That issue has now been resolved," he said.

On compensation, Das said the CJP had urged the government to give an assurance before the Supreme Court that affected families would receive compensation within 90 days.

What Centre, Delhi Police Told Supreme Court

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta who was appearing for the Centre and the Delhi Police, informed the Supreme Court that the Centre remained committed to fulfilling all three assurances given to the leadership of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) during a meeting between the Centre and the party.

The first assurance was that the Centre would not pursue FIRs registered between July 20 and July 25. The second assurance was that no fresh FIRs would be registered in connection with the matter. The final assurance was that the government would pay compensation to students who died by suicide allegedly in connection with the NEET paper leak.

Mehta further told the Supreme Court that the Centre, the Delhi Police, and the states of Bihar, Assam, West Bengal and Maharashtra had filed applications seeking the quashing of FIRs linked to the student protests. He also assured the court that no future FIRs would be registered in respect of protest-related events between July 20 and July 25.

CJP Chief Spokesperson Saurav Das on Monday said the Delhi Police had approached the Supreme Court seeking the quashing of around 13 FIRs filed against protesters, invoking Article 142 of the Constitution.

He called the development positive and said CJP representatives would attend the hearing. Das also said the government had been holding talks with the party over the FIRs and compensation, including meetings in Pondicherry.

He added that CJP would continue to monitor the situation and its proposed September 5 peaceful march from India Gate to the Police Headquarters.

The Gen Z-led outfit had called for a protest on September 5 at Delhi's India Gate, alleging a breach of trust by the Centre over cases filed against students.
