In a breakthrough in the Chandigarh BJP office hand grenade attack case, the police have arrested five suspects, while a hunt has been going on for two others.

According to a report by Jagran.com, the attack was carried out at the behest of handlers in Germany and Portugal, who have been identified. An ISI connection has also emerged.

The five accused were arrested in a joint operation of the Chandigarh Police and the Punjab Police's Counter-Intelligence Wing. The arrested accused have been identified as Balwinder Lal alias Shami, a resident of Majri village in Nawanshahr, Jasvir Singh alias Jassi of Bharapur village, Charanjit Singh alias Channi of Sujawalpur village, Rubal Chauhan of Thana village, and Mandeep alias Abhijot Sharma of Dhuri in Sangrur.

In a post on X, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said, "In a major breakthrough, the Counter Intelligence wing of Punjab Police, in a joint operation with Chandigarh Police, solved the grenade attack case."

The teams have confiscated a hand grenade and 15 cartridges from them. Raids are now underway at potential hideouts to arrest the main accused, Gurtej Singh and Amanpreet Singh.

This module was operating with the support of Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI. According to the Jagran.com report, investigative agencies have said that the network was operated by handlers based abroad, who were providing instructions from Portugal and Germany.

"Multiple cutouts and sub-modules were used. This operation has effectively foiled a major terror conspiracy aimed at disrupting peace and harmony in the region. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the main accused involved in the case. Punjab Police remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety, security, and communal harmony in the region," said the DGP.

How weapons were delivered

The police investigation also revealed that the weapons and ammunition used in the attack were delivered to the accused through a well-organised supply chain. The consignments were transported from one location to another by multiple operatives, avoiding the attention of security agencies.

According to sources cited by Jagran report, the entire conspiracy was carried out under the direction of Baljot Singh, alias Jot, a handler based in Portugal. The accused, in coordination with each other, not only ensured the delivery of weapons but also played an active role in planning and executing the attack.

Seizures and technical investigations

Joint police teams recovered a live hand grenade and 15 live .30 bore cartridges during the operation. Additionally, police are examining electronic devices, call detail records (CDRs), and other technical evidence to unravel the entire network.

Search continues for absconding accused

To arrest the two absconding accused, police have formed special teams and are conducting raids in various states. Given the international connections, coordination is also being done with central agencies.

Focus on further investigation

Police say that the main objective of the investigation now is to expose the entire structure of this module, trace the supply chain of weapons and connect the links of its network spread across the country and abroad.

Additionally, an investigation is underway to determine whether this module has any connection to other incidents. Security agencies are taking this matter seriously and thoroughly investigating every aspect to prevent similar incidents in the future.
