The Police have arrested five people for allegedly supplying weapons to the attackers in the hand grenade attack outside the BJP headquarters in Chandigarh. All five accused come from ordinary families. Information gathered from the accused's village suggests none of them has any criminal record.
According to a report by Jagran.com, three of the accused are from the Nawanshahr district. Charanjit Singh, 28, a resident of Sulawalpur village in Nawanshahr district, is a Portuguese citizen and had recently arrived in India.
It is reported that his father, Surinder Singh, had filed a police complaint that his son was scheduled to return to Portugal on April 2, but before that time, he was abducted by 10-12 people in three vehicles. Later, it was revealed that he had not been kidnapped but had been arrested by the police.
Similarly, 25-year-old Balwinder Lal, a resident of village Majri, who is a 10th pass, runs a barber shop in the village, while his father Satpal runs a sweet shop.
Balwinder is said to be a drug addict. Another accused, Jasvir Singh, a resident of the village of Bharapur, comes from a simple farming family and has lived in Germany. The villagers are also shocked to learn that all three were involved in anti-national activities.
Abhijot Sharma, a resident of Dhuri village in Sangrur district, is said to be a drug addict. His wife has left him and gone to her parents' home because of his behaviour.
His family includes his mother, brother, and sister-in-law, who declined to comment. People said his family has also distanced themselves from him, and he lives alone.
No one knows where he lives. Rubal Chauhan, another accused, had gone to Chandigarh for higher education. A resident of Thana Bhagdar village in Shimla district, Rubal's grandfather worked in the Parliament House, while his father has his own business in Delhi.
Rubal reportedly lived there with his mother. He then went to Chandigarh for higher education and had no criminal record.
Villagers say that after moving to Chandigarh, Rubal spends most of his time away from home. He rarely visits the village. Locals say that the Punjab police arrested Rubal from his village.
